SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese celebrated the contributions of Pope Benedict the XVI with a special mass, timed to coincide with his departure from the Vatican.

Bishop Robert Cunningham told the faithful that Benedict has left a rich legacy which enriched the church and its people.

“When he was elected Pope and began his ministry, people wondered what type of Pope he would be. Through his teaching and preaching, he led us ever closer to God,” said Bishop Cunningham.

The Bishop says Catholics should now pray for the College of Cardinals as they prepare to begin a conclave to select a successor to Benedict.
