CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Cortland leaders are talking about the impending sequester, saying it would cause big problems for the city.

If a deal isn't reached between Congress and President Obama by this Friday, many organizations that rely on federal aid will be affected.In particular, Mayor Brian Tobin says that the Cortland community faces threats to emergency and educational services, along with many everyday needs. He's urging federal leaders to come up with some sort of agreement.

"So these are some tremendous impacts that will have on people that are really going to be hurt the most and it's the basic needs. We cannot put our children and our people at risk under the gun," Mayor Tobin said.

More than 15 percent of the Cortland community is already living at or below the federal poverty line, meaning a family of four is surviving off just under $24,000 a year.
