SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse residents got a firsthand look at the school district's budget situation Monday night. The spending plan was presented at a public hearing at the district offices.

Once again, cuts are part of the $368 million proposal. About 63 positions are on the table, including 22 teaching or counseling jobs.

Superintendent Sharon Contreras says in the past four to five years, they've lost a quarter of their staff and it's become a balancing act.

"Each year, that number does come down as we receive more retirements and resignations. But it's important to remember those are still position cuts. So even though we are able to recall most of our staff, we still have fewer people in the buildings," Contreras said.

And the district could be facing even more cuts at the federal level if the deadline for sequestration is not met. Contreras says they stand to lose several million dollars in funds, impacting special education and after school programs.
