SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- We all know that maintaining a health smile for a lifetime begins when children are young. In recognition of Children's Dental Health Month, Fidelis Care is joining dental providers across the state to educate parents and kids about dental health.

We visited one dentist who has been talking to parents about staying on their children about brushing and flossing. He says there's a connection between good oral hygiene and overall health and wellness.

Here's some tips that parents can follow to help their kids maintain a health smile. Kids should be brushing at least twice everyday and clean between their teeth. Children should also limit snacks, eat nutritious meals, and visit a dentist regularly.

Members of Fidelis Care say there's no reason not to get your child to the dentist.

Dr. Gideon Ochiabuto of Quality Family Dental said, "The only way you can clean between the teeth is to floss. So, parents should also supervise and have their children do that. Flossing and brush twice a day."

Fidelis Care Marketing Director Tom Julian said, "It's just a reminder out there that the programs we have, Family Health Plus, Manage Medicaid, Child Health Plus, they all cover dental care. With little or no cost so people should get to the dentist and live a healthier lifestyle."

Parents and teachers are encouraged to visit the American Dental Association website to learn more tips and information regarding dental health.
