AUBURN, N.Y. -- It was a long night for firefighters in the City of Auburn battling a fire on Lansing Street.

First responders say when they got to the home, the flames were so intense they had to get out of the house. Both people inside escaped without injury.

Firefighters faced a wide range of problems, including the closest fire hydrant freezing.

Auburn Fire Chief Jeff Dygert said, "The issue is the cold weather. The cold weather affects our water supply occasionally. It affects the fire ground operations because everything freezes. Our guys are freezing up, their gloves freeze, and they can't move their hands. The ladders freeze, the hoses freeze, so that becomes a problem."

Crews had to bring water in from fire hydrants 500 feet away from the house.

The cause remains under investigation.
