CHENANGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Village of Oxford's Board of Trustees has approved the first hydrofracking ban on record in Chenango County. The zoning ordinance was passed in a four to one vote that bans gas exploration, extraction and disposal within the village.

The board had attempted to vote on the moratorium in December last year, but efforts were put on hold after drilling proponents threatened to sue.

This time, the board was able to move forward with the vote, claiming the village zoning laws already prohibited gas drilling.

The Village of Oxford is now the only municipality in the county to have a ban in place.

According to Fracktracker.org, there are currently 11 other towns in the county that are pushing for similar moratoriums or bans.
