CENTRAL NEW YORK -- The next time you're at your local Tops or Wegmans supermarket across the region, you're encouraged to grab coupons for $2, $3, or $5 at the register and add it to your bill. That effort will help the Food Bank supply food in one of its 268 emergency assistance programs.
This has become one of the most important fundraisers for the year which has gone on now for 18 years. They say every dollar donated will turn in to two and a half meals.
You can scan a coupon to add $2, $3, or $5 to your bill or choose to round up your bill to the nearest dollar to donate what you wish.
Officials say they've been fortunate to partner with both Tops and Wegmans to help others in need.
"It certainly is so important, it's a critical time when it's colder out. These last few weeks have certainly allowed us to make sure people are having the food instead of having to worry about paying for heat and food at the same time. And, again, because they partner with us were able to bring that money back and provide food for all our emergency food network," said Kathleen Stress, CNY Food Bank Chief Operating Officer.
Last year, both Tops and Wegmans helped raise more than $85,000 and the goal is to top that this year.
