Only on Corning's Market Street is where you can find a wide array of gift stores, coffee shops and the most unusual celebrations. Friday a handful of stores celebrated a man who may not get enough praise for his contribution to society. YNN's Katie Husband was in the Gaffer District and has more on Thomas Crapper Day.

CORNING, N.Y. -- "Well, it's January so, you have to do something fun and silly and goofy so, we decided that we had to celebrate his birthday," said Pam Weachock, Market Street Coffee and Tea, owner.

Who's birthday? Just the man responsible for helping us take care of everyday business.

"Thomas Crapper was actually credited for inventing the indoor toilet," said Weachock.

So, Friday was Thomas Crapper Day on Market Street.

"It was a little odd, I've never heard of it," said Caty Menard, customer.

Eight stores in the Gaffer District collected rolls of toilet paper in exchange for discounts on certain items in the store. The rolls will then be donated here, at the Corning Community Food Pantry.

"The food pantry really needs toilet paper. They need toilet paper, they need diapers, they need paper products, you know, you always need everything besides just food," said Weachock.

Which is why they keep up the tradition making this the fourth year doing it.

"Most of our money goes towards the purchase of food and we're not able to purchase the personal items anymore so, this is great," said Beth Wasson, Corning Community Food Pantry, co-executive director.

Even though this birthday celebration may seem silly, business owners say it's a great way to engage the people around them.

"It's just the thing, I think what small businesses should do to support one another, do cross marketing, have fun and have fun with the community," said Cynthia Dickermen, Beyond Baskets, owner and designer.

So, the next time you flush don't just think about how Mr. Crapper influenced you, think about how he influenced this small community.

"I was a little taken back but we'll celebrate just about anything if it's going to go for a good cause to charity," said Menard.

This year's goal was 300 rolls and business owners say they surpassed that late in the afternoon.

The final count won't be in until Monday because only a few select stores are going to continue collecting toilet paper over the weekend.
