Heavy lake effect snow has been pounding Oswego County and the Tug Hill area all day long. Now, that band is starting to move south, impacting more of Central New York. Our Katie Gibas is in the thick of it in Central Square.

OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- Emergency officials tells us that in some places in Oswego County, roads are impassable and visibility is nearly zero. Some of the areas getting hit the hardest are seeing two to four inches of snow per hour, topping 20 inches before the day is out.

A travel advisory is in effect for Oswego County. Officials are urging everyone to stay home if possible.

"Cars became stuck or abandoned, and now you have snowplow crews trying to get through there, and they're inhibited by all the abandoned vehicles up in that area. So it may be that yeah, you can get out of your driveway, but how far get down that road remains to be scene. There have been reports of the actually snowplows getting stuck on 81 because the roadway is simply impassable," said Gene Sullivan, Oswego County Undersheriff.

Authorities warn people that if they do have to go out, use extreme caution and beware of quickly changing conditions.

Anyone braving the conditions should clear snow off their car, have emergency gear, including flares, extra clothes and water.
