WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Some changes have been made at a popular sledding spot in Watertown after what was supposed to act as a cushion for sledders acted more like a brick wall.
Hay bales at Thompson Park have been removed and replaced with nylon ski fencing. The replacement comes after city officials received complaints about children injuring themselves after running into the frozen bales.
The fencing, along with cushioned trees, is something park officials hope will create a safer environment for riders.
"We did some investigating. We called around to some other sledding hills and this is the best option at this point in time. It had the quickest turnaround time. You know, we really think it's much safer than the bales of hay," said Erin Gardner, Parks and Recreation Superintendent.
A snow fence was also placed halfway up the hill to stop riders from climbing up too high.
