SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A landmark building on Syracuse's east side is getting a facelift.

The former Babcock-Shattuck House on the corner of East Genesee and Westcott streets is getting extensive exterior work done. The cost is estimated at more than $300,000 and is partially funded by a grant from the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

The building was commonly known as the Jewish War Veterans Home, built in the late 19th century.

The home has been boarded up and vacant for more than 20 years.

The nonprofit University Neighborhood Preservation Association recently purchased the property from the city and is planning to covert the house into condominiums. The entire project should be completed in a year.
