UTICA, N.Y. -- Utica leaders are taking the next step, hoping to transform Genesee Street downtown. People got a chance to learn more about the proposed $13.9 million project Tuesday night.

Plans call for additional parking space throughout downtown, making it easier for people to visit businesses. The proposal also calls for an overhaul of the sewers, sidewalks and new medians to be built.

However, not everyone is thrilled. Some business owners are worried that construction could turn away customers in the short term. But leaders say the development could be key in helping the city down the road.

"I hope with the vitality of the Harza building and some of the good things that are happening, Utica, New York is open for business and downtown is percolating at this point. We are excited about the number of investors and people that are looking at the downtown area," Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri said.

The City of Utica is hoping for a grant to help with the project. Leaders expect to find out if it’s approved within the next month.
