WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The latest jobs report is out and it shows the country's unemployment rate stayed almost unchanged in December.

The economy added 155,000 new jobs for the final month of 2012. But the number of people filing for unemployment benefits rose slightly, bringing the total unemployment rate to 7.8 percent.

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis says action to avert the effects of the fiscal cliff will help the U.S. economy continue to add jobs.

“The numbers continue to show good increase in different areas and sectors that have been really hard hit. Construction, we added jobs there in the first time in a long time and we also saw manufacturing coming back," said Solis.

Solis says job seekers should consider training programs in the construction and manufacturing fields, two areas that continue to experience growth and hiring demand. In December, the economy also saw hiring increases in the healthcare and food service sectors.
