NEW YORK STATE -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is hoping to encourage shrub willow growth in New York State.
It's part of a push for more renewable energy that's moving from experimentation to commercial production.
The federal government invested more than$ 4 million to encourage landowners to grow the shrub willow. When it's harvested, the chipped willow is then sold to energy producer ReEnergy. The company currently has three plants in the North Country in Chateaugay, Lyons Falls and on Fort Drum.
