EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- An old school has been transformed in East Syracuse. The former Heman Street School will now be used as affordable apartments for senior citizens.

Six of the apartments are being set aside for people who need supportive services through Catholic Charities.

Friday afternoon, there was an open house for people to get a sneak preview. The grand opening isn't until March.

Developers say a lot of the people taking tours, are curious about what happened to the old building.

"Many of the folks that came in either went to school here or had a child go to school here. This is the fifth school renovation we've done, and more often than not somebody says ‘well I want the old third grade classroom because it was my best year.’ So for them a lot of folks are coming in to see what we did with the building," said Susan Kimmel, President of Two Plus Four Construction.

There will also be a designated green space with park benches, sidewalks and a patio. Designs also include a central community room that will give people a place to gather.
