Church collecting violent games

BROOME COUNTRY, N.Y. -- The recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut is prompting one local church to ask parents to take a closer look at what is under their Christmas trees.
Saint Francis of Assisi in Hillcrest will hold a drive starting December 26th to collect any violent toys or games that might have been presents for the holiday. Any unopened items that are turned in at the church with a sales receipt will be returned to the store, and the money will be collected and donated to charities related to the tragedy. Opened or used toys and games will also be collected and discarded.
Saint Francis' priest says removing violent entertainment is just one aspect of what he says needs to be a cultural change moving forward.
"We're not making judgments on the parents or anybody, we're all guilty. I think it's just a moment now for us to really examine this in what ways and what steps forward can we make for a better future for the children," said Fr. Tim Taugher, Pastor, St. Francis of Assisi.
Donations can be made at the Saint Francis Parish Office on Chenango Street in Hillcrest.
