WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. -- An early morning fire sent one woman to the hospital. It happened a little before 4:30 a.m. Sunday on Academy Street in Whitney Point.

Crews rushed to the scene, got everyone out and called in a two alarm fire. They say a woman in her mid to late 50s was taken to Wilson Hospital for burns.

About eight departments and 50 firemen helped out. It took two hours to get the flames under control.

Authorities say they believe it started as an accident on the first floor and quickly spread to the second floor.

"It was a single family house converted into four apartments. There was a lot of chopped of areas and void spaces. We were able to contain it to two apartments, the other two weren't affect by the fire," said Whitney Point Fire Chief Nick Sculley.

Code enforcement officers need to inspect the building before they’ll know if anyone can move back in. Investigators are still looking into what caused the fire.
