PORT BYRON, N.Y. -- Local veterans were honored by the Cayuga County community in an annual wreath laying ceremony.

Members of the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 704 and the Port Byron school community held their third Wreaths Across America Celebration Friday. Nine wreaths were presented in Port Byron as part of the nationwide ceremony. More than 400,000 wreaths will honor veterans around the country.

Event organizers say the ceremonies are a great way to remember those who served and to teach younger generations of their courage.

"There's a legacy here, that if we don't let our children understand what's happened, they'll forget and what is past is prologue. In order to have in our global world, children understand what is going on and why we need to have peace, it's only to the work of veterans," said Wreaths Across America location leader Dr. Linda Townsend.

Wreaths will be presented in all 50 states. Wreaths Across America is a non-profit organization.
