OWEGO, N.Y. -- As technology continues to advance, our cell phones can become more and more of a distraction. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says thousands of people die each year as a result of distracted driving.

Students at Owego Free Academy are taking the risk seriously. Several signed the Eyes Forward pledge Thursday. The campaign encourages young drivers to be an example by putting away their mobile devices before they get behind the wheel.

"Some tips would be to put your phone off to the side and like put it on vibrate or silence it, or turn it off. Another thing would be if you have passengers in your car you could have them answer it for you," said Chris Lapinski, OFA Senior.

Those who signed the pledge had it posted on the wall. They were also given a bracelet as a visual reminder to keep their eyes on the road.
