BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- One of Binghamton's busiest streets is set to get a makeover.

The city hosted an informational meeting Thursday for residents regarding the Front Street Gateway Project.

Infrastructure improvements will be made from the area bordered by Prospect Street to the north and Main Street to the south. The entire project is estimated to cost $10 million. Only half of that is currently funded, so the city plans to start with the area from Winding Way to Prospect Street and continue once more money comes in. Included is work to the roadway, as well as sidewalks, drainage and some cosmetic updates.

"It's aesthetically unpleasing right now when you drive through, so one of the goals of this project is to spruce it up, make it look nicer, a better experience for travelers to come down Front Street into the city. There will be some sort of a gateway feature at that point, and there will be a lot of other features such as landscaping," said city engineer Philip Krey.

The improvements will be funded by federal, state and local money. Construction is expected to start in early 2014.
