JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Drivers in Jefferson County will have a new stretch of blacktop to cruise on Thursday as State Route 781 will be opened to traffic.

The new road is part of the Fort Drum Connector project and took over two years to construct.

The four-and-a-half mile extension stretches from Interstate 81 to the Fort Drum main gate. The entire road is expected to be fully accessible by the end of the day Thursday.

This is one of the largest Department of Transportation projects in the North Country in recent years.
