ALASKA -- An accused serial killer whose alleged crimes tied him to the North Country is now dead.

Israel Keyes was found dead in an Alaskan jail cell and police say it was a suicide.

Keyes was set to go to trial for the murder of a coffee barista from Alaska, but prosecutors said he also killed a couple in Essex, Vermont in 2011. And investigators say they found murder weapons allegedly used by Keyes in the St. Lawrence County village of Parishville.

Prosecutors say he had come to the Northeast in 2009, specifically Vermont, and said he returned to Vermont in 2011 for no other reason than to kill someone.

Investigators say Keyes admitted to killing four other people in Washington and one person in New York State, but did not release the victims' names.
