BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Binghamton's mayor and city council talked big money Monday night as Matt Ryan asks for a $5,000 stipend for declining to drive a city vehicle during his time in office.

Ryan says he rarely uses a car when he goes to and from work, but when he does, it is his own personal vehicle and he doesn't expense his mileage, with the exception of some trips to Albany and Washington, D.C.

Ryan told the council he would like either a $5,000 stipend or a new car that would also be available for future mayors to drive.

Councilors say before they can make any decisions, they need to look at the numbers and weigh some options.

"Our purchasing manager would be the one to get us additional information and hopefully he will provide us with that information, sales price, list price, maintenance costs. So we can do a real comparison and in the meantime look at the city's current fleet and see if there's anything that might be available," said Binghamton City Councilor Teri Rennia.

The car controversy is expected to be discussed at the council's next work session on December 17th.
