VESTAL, N.Y. -- Nearly 100 Girl Scouts got a valuable life lesson Friday night, learning the truth about hunger.

The Girl Scouts of NY-PENN Pathways hosted a Hunger Banquet. As part of the exercise, each girl was given a colored plate and told to sit at a table with the balloon matching that color, representing different family incomes.

The girls were served food based on their income, highest earning got five meatballs and those who made the least got none. Many say they were shocked after they learned about how many people are in need.

"I was surprised how much help they need, because we learned about money worth and like, where they are compared to where I am. And like, sometimes we think we have it bad, but not really," said Lauren Myers, Vestal Middle School 8th Grader.

After the activity was over, all of the girls shared a full meal. They also collected and donated food for the Food Bank.
