BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Broome County says ‘goodbye’ to a former County Executive. Don McManus died Tuesday night after fighting leukemia.

Family and friends packed St. Anthony Church in Endicott Monday morning for his funeral.

McManus was the first Democrat elected as Broome County Executive in 1976. He also served as a councilman and supervisor in the Town of Union. And he worked in state government, working for governors Hugh Carey and Mario Cuomo.

Members of the McManus family describe him as someone who lived his life with God first, family second and community and public service third. McManus was 79 years old.
