Our Iris St. Meran was with troopers in Onondaga County where State Police are trying to make sure drivers are sober.

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Thanksgiving Eve can be a dangerous night on the roads. It's one of the busiest night for officers, pulling over drunk drivers.

To keep people safe, many local departments set up checkpoints.

Wednesday night was a multi-agency effort. This particular Onondaga County checkpoint had state and local police.

Officers stopped cars talking to drivers. Troopers say in that conversation they may be able to smell alcohol on someone's breath. If they believe you have been drinking, they'll make you do a field sobriety test.

Their message is simple: DWI is a preventable crime.

"If you're planning on going to a get together and you're not sure if you're going to be drinking and driving, just leave your keys with someone who can drive you home, take a taxi, there's a number of other ways of getting home," said New York State Police Trooper Jack Keller.

These checkpoints will happen through the holiday weekend. They're also checking for other traffic violations, like seatbelts.
