CAYUGA HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- A controversial plan to cull deer in the Village of Cayuga Heights has been put on hold after residents have refused to allow the killing on their properties.

After years of debate and legal action, village leaders were cleared to begin a deer remediation plan this winter. It involved sterilizing up to 60 deer and culling the rest. But not enough residents signed consent forms to allow shooting within 500 feet of their properties.

On Tuesday, village leaders revised the plan. Instead of killing the deer, up to 145 does will be sterilized instead.

Mayor Kate Supron says the alternative plan will cost more, but will allow for an accurate count of the deer population.

Village leaders will evaluate the plan and decide how to proceed in the spring.
