SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Every year, shoppers spend lots of money during the holiday season in November and December, and one organization is hoping you'll decide to spend some of that money locally.

SyracuseFirst put together an event at the Chocolate Pizza Company locations in Manlius and Marcellus for Buy Local Month.

Organizers say it can make a big difference to the Central New York economy to keep money local. They're hoping events like this will change shoppers' habits.

"When they're going out to do their holiday shopping or any of their commercial activity, think if there's a locally-owned business that provides what they're looking for, whether it's a gift idea or a professional service," said Chris Fowler, SyracuseFirst executive director.

Ten percent of the proceeds from Saturday's event will be donated to the Syracuse Rescue Mission.
