ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The oldest charitable organization in Chemung County has opened its Big Book, seeking donations for the 2012 holiday season. The Arctic League collects donations that go towards toys for needy children.

Last year, the 100-year-old charity set a record by raising $120,000. The impressive fundraising inspired it to try and hit the record number again this year. The Arctic League has only 180 applications so far. Board members say that's a low rate, which could be a trend.

"We saw a decrease last year, which surprised us somewhat, I'm not too sure why. We have some security issues that we try to deal with, not heavily, certainly because we don't want to punish the children," said Jake Hover, Arctic League President.

There are fourteen different locations in the county where you can drop off donations.
