SAN DIEGO, CA -- The Syracuse Orange tipped off their season on Sunday on an aircraft carrier, instead of the Carrier Dome. Thousands of fans turned out for Battle on the Midway, featuring the Orange and the San Diego State Aztecs.

Instead of a condition-controlled arena, players had to contest with the wind, and the sun in their eyes. Syracuse came out on top, knocking off the 20th ranked Aztecs. But, it was less about the game, and more about the experience for players and fans.

"It's pretty darn special, and you just get chills watching these players on this court with that bridge up behind. It's unbelievable, and the sun is shining, and who watches outdoor college basketball? This is phenomenal," said Rose Marie Nelson, an SU fan.

Another fan, Carol Robbins, added, "The fact it's Veterans Day, and it honors them, gives them the chance to watch it. Syracuse is such a great team and such a great town, great sports town. And just the opportunity this brings to the Syracuse fans, and to the players."

Two other games that were scheduled for aircraft carriers were canceled this week due to condensation on the court.
