CORNING, N.Y. -- Members of the United Steel Workers Local 1000 in Corning had an idea that some workers would be getting laid off at Corning, Inc. but it's no less of a blow to the impacted workers.

One-hundred workers were told this week their jobs were being cut because of declining demand overseas for automotive and diesel engine manufacturing. Seventy-five of them work at the company's diesel plant in Corning. The other 25 are from the Erwin plant.

The layoffs take effect this Friday.

Union members hope there's a chance they can get their jobs back.

"It could have been a bigger number or it could have been a smaller number. What we're really hoping for is this is kind of it for now. So right now they're talking about there may be the potential to bring most of these folks back after the first of the year," said Mike Walker, President of USW Local 1000.

Walker says employees could be brought back if the economy gets better. He says he won't hear word about possibly bringing the workers back until about mid-December.
