NEW YORK STATE -- You have two extra calendar days to file your taxes this year. But that extended deadline is just 10 days away.
However, a new partnership between the government and private tax software may be able to help New Yorkers out. "Free File" is a free public service that Congressman Tom Reed said not only improves the accuracy of your state income tax returns, but also speeds up the refund checks showing up in the mailbox.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office says Free File has saved the IRS upwards of $104 million in processing costs because it files taxes online. Reed promoted Free File in Corning this week.
Reed said, “It's about public and private partnerships coming together to do better governance and to provide opportunities to constituents in a way that benefits them."
New York is one of 22 states to offer free tax filing services. There is nothing to buy or download. There are income restrictions for the free service, but if you can e-file your federal taxes for free, then you're likely eligible to file your *state taxes without cost as well.
