SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Returning all those bottles and cans that pile up may not seem worth your time, but a new redemption center will funnel the proceeds back into the Central New York community.
Tuesday morning the Rescue Mission opened their newest bottle and can redemption center, called "Mission Returns." The new facility is located on Erie Boulevard East in Syracuse.
People can either keep their bottle deposit return fees, or donate them to the Rescue Mission. Those donations will help fund their programs aiming to end homelessness and hunger. Officials say they expect this new location to be very busy.
"It is a high density area, lots of traffic coming through, great track record with customer service, so we're looking forward to seeing more customers and donors coming into the Mission Returns center here on Erie Boulevard East," said Alan Thornton, Rescue Mission Chief Executive Officer.
There are currently seven "Mission Return" centers in the Syracuse area, but the Rescue Mission says they plan to open several more in the future. In addition to taking donations, the facilities also provide job training for Rescue Mission clients.
