Play resumes in Turning Stone Resort Championship

By: Karen Lee

VERNON, N.Y. -- The pros are out on the links as the first round of the Turning Stone Resort Championship is now underway. Local favorite Notah Begay III teed off at the Atunyote golf course earlier this morning. The weather caused play to be suspended for a few hours earlier this morning as thunderstorms moved across the area.

This is the first year the tournament is being held in the summer, in part to get away from the cold, and also to make the event more family-friendly.

VERNON, N.Y. -- In just a few hours, the first golfers will tee off at this year's Turning Stone Resort Championship. This is the first year the tournament has been held in the summer. The day is looking to be very warm with a chance of thunderstorms. If you’re coming to Atunyote today you should bring an umbrella.

If you are coming out to the tournament make sure you leave some extra time to enjoy some of the other festivities happening at the Turning Stone. As you make your way past the main entrance you’ll notice a few tents. This year there is a new tent called the Oneida Nation History and Cultural Showcase Tent. You’ll see three actors reenacting a scene from the American Revolution.

The scene show displays a time during the American Revolution when Chief Shenendoah sent Polly Cooper and others to help General George Washington with a mass food shortage. An Oneida statue called, "Allies in War, Partners in Peace," marks this period in our history and it has been replicated for the tournament trophy.

You'll learn about that all of this as well as take part in other crafts and educational seminars.

"We're the first Indian tribe that had a PGA golf course tournament so it's important that we share who we are and where we began, and where we are now," said the actor playing Polly Cooper, an Oneida Nation historical figure.

There are events and exhibits for kids. For information on the tournament visit turningstonechampionship.com.
