Simply saying you are going somewhere named "The Bugaboos" is enough to conjure up cartoon images of technicolor meadows bursting with flowers and streams, under the shadow of snowcapped peaks. That is exactly what one can find in a "Bodacious Girlfriend Getaways" trip through a gloriously remote mountain range in the Purcell Mountains of eastern British Columbia.
Then there's the other reality, the dangerous thrill of a heli-hiking excursion.
"Picture the helicopter on its side, that turns into a ladder, so you guys can get out of the helicopter," says Perry Hirsch, an alpine helicopter pilot.
"If we accidentally surprise a bear or walk into a bear, he may display some aggressive behavior," says hiking guide Lyle Grisedale.
It's an adrenaline rush to feel the manly power of helicopter rotors on a trip for women only. The one I experienced courtesy of CMH Summer Adventures, was billed as heli-hiking and yoga.
But why squeeze a yoga mat into a cramped conference room when there is amazing scenery to ground you? We were here for the hiking anyway, airlifted to heady trails, landing on impossible targets.
Even the so-called easy trails have an element of extreme adventure, which makes the three-night trip the ultimate bonding experience.
One hiker who traveled with her daughter says, "She's pushing me to do something I'm not comfortable to do, but she’s there."
The daughter says, "When she rappeled down that glacier, I was so impressed with her."
There are four Bodacious trips in August 2013, offering lodging, all meals and most gear for $2,690 per person. Airfare is extra. For more information, visit www.cmhsummer.com/bodacious.
