State of Education: Student gets perfect score on AP exam

There’s been some bad news in some of our schools lately, but now we have some good news, or more specifically, for one student, you could even say it's "perfect." Our Vince Gallagher explains.

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -- Meet Eric Wu, a senior at the Shenedehowa High School. A student who has a keen interest in computer programming.

Wu said, "Back in seventh grade, I started programming computers like assembly and ever since then programming became my hobby."

A hobby Wu became very good at. So much so that he has just earned a perfect score on his AP Computer Science A Exam.

“Twelve years here at Shenendehowa and this is the first time we've had a perfect score on the test," technology teacher Chris Hanley said.

But it gets even better. Wu not only received the top score, but in doing so, he has become one of only 18 students in the world to earn every point possible in the Computer Science A Exam and he did it all under pressure

Hanley said, "Both sections of the test are timed and so he had to do that in an hour and 15 minutes for 40 multiple choice and an hour and 45 for his written parts."

Most of this deals with basics of java programming, something, not surprisingly, he's looking at for further education

"Either a computer scientist or electrical engineer and that's what I want to do in college," said Wu.

Right now, he's considering his options. MIT is a possibility, but as his teacher mentions, he shouldn't have any problem moving from classroom to campus

"He did an outstanding job, very assertive, very bright, very motivated, took attention to detail, prepared himself well," Hanley said.

Wu says he also got a hundred on his finals, his overall GPA is right around 98 and if that isn’t enough, he plays violin for the Empire State Youth Orchestra. But even for him, this certain accomplishment wasn't always easy.

"It was still pretty challenging and we did a lot of practice questions in class," Wu said.

An example where practice really does make perfect.
