As our pets get older, just like humans, they can experience stiffness in their hips, back, and joints. But a few simple things can help make them more comfortable.

Lis Conarton, a Pet Physical therapist, says you can help ease your pet’s joint pain before you head outside for a little exercise.

“If you know your pet has arthritis, you want to make sure you warm them up before you take them outside. A cool little exercise is just to walk them in circles while still in the home, and let them stretch. If you have a dog that does not have a thick coat, you can use a coat to cover the part of the body that has the arthritis,” said Lis Conarton, a certified pet rehabilitator.

When the pain is too much for us, humans can take a pain pill. But Lis advises that you seek out more holistic treatments before asking your vet for a prescription.

“Actually the better trick is to do neutra-ceuticals or non-pharmacy related natural things like omega 3 fatty acids. Research is a really good thing and then asking you vet what is good for your pet is really important,” said Conarton.

Remember, when any medication - whether holistic or prescribed - it’s important to talk to your vet first.
