TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Family and friends in Ithaca mourn the death of a firefighter and paramedic in Virginia.

Joshua Weissman, 33, died Thursday of a head injury he sustained while responding to a car fire in Alexandria. Weissman fell over a cement barrier on the interstate to a rocky creek below.

The Ithaca native worked at Bangs Ambulance and spent nine years at the Cayuga Heights Fire Department before moving with his wife to Virginia in 2005. He began volunteering with the department when he was 16 years old.

George Tamborelle, of the Cayuga Heights Fire Department said, “He was one of the best. He really was. He wanted to do nothing but be a firefighter and a paramedic for his entire life. When he was a child he would hang out here at the fire station. His father brought him over."

Several of Weissman's fellow firefighters plan to travel to Virginia for the funeral services next week.
